Dominican Republic wins Caribbean Series

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (AP) Los Leones del Escogido from the Dominican Republic won the Caribbean Series, beating Venezuela's Leones del Caracas 7-4 Sunday night in the final game of the six-day series.

The Dominican Republic finished 5-1, one game better than Puerto Rico's Indios de Mayaguez (4-2). It's the third Caribbean Series title for the Dominican club and the 18th for a team from the Dominican Republic.

Raul Valdes pitched five innings to earn his second win of the series and the Dominican Republic scored four runs in the top of the first. Valdes gave up three hits and four runs, striking out five. (MORE)

Puerto Rico stops Venezuela, keeps DR from title

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (AP) Puerto Rico's Indios de Mayaguez defeated Venezuela's Leones del Caracas 7-1 on Saturday to send the title chase for the Caribbean Series into the final day.

A victory by Venezuela would have clinched the title for the Dominican Republic's Leones del Escogido, which defeated Mexico's Naranjeros de Hermosillo 7-2 earlier in the day.

The Dominicans are 4-1 and can clinch the title by beating the Venezuelans (1-4) on Sunday. If the Dominicans lose, Puerto Rico (3-2) can force a playoff game on Monday by beating the Mexican club. (MORE)

Dominicans near title with 7-2 win vs. Mexico

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (AP) Fernando Martinez, Kevin Barker and Juan Francisco homered for the Dominican Republic's Los Leones del Escogido, helping them get closer to the Caribbean Series title with a 7-2 win over Naranjeros de Hermosillo on Saturday.

If Venezuela, represented by Leones del Caracas, beats Puerto Rico's Indios de Mayaguez in the later game, the Dominican Republic will win the series. If not, the title will be decided Sunday on the tournament's final day.

Heath Phillips struck out seven in seven innings for Los Leones, yielding only three hits and two runs. (MORE)

Mexico beats Venezuela 3-2 in 10 innings

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (AP) Vinny Castilla drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th, lifting Mexico club Naranjeros de Hermosillo to a 3-2 victory Friday night over Venezuela's Leones del Caracas in the Caribbean Series.

The victory improved Mexico to 2-2 and kept it in the hunt to win the tournament, which ends Sunday. The Caracas team fell to 1-3.

The 42-year-old Castilla's hit to center was out of the reach of Erold Andrus. Heber Gomez opened the inning with a single and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Roberson. Karim Garcia was intentionally walked to get to Castilla. (MORE)

Dominican Republic beats Venezuela 3-2

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (AP) Freddy Guzman stole home to break a tie in the seventh inning and Dominican Republic team Leones del Escogido won 3-2 over Venezuela's Leones de Caracas in the Caribbean Series.

The victory was the Dominican team's third straight in the series, leaving Leones in excellent shape to win. The three other clubs are 1-2.

The Venezuelans took a 2-0 lead in the third. The Dominicans chipped away with one run in the sixth. In the seventh, the Dominicans tied the game on Ramon Santiago's hit that drove in Pablo Ozuna. Guzman reached third and then stole home off pitcher Edgar Alfonzo. (MORE)

Indios beat Naranjeros 5-3

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (AP) Puerto Rican club Indios de Mayaguez defeated Mexico's Naranjeros de Hermosillo 5-3 in the Caribbean Series on Thursday.

Indios jumped on top with three runs in the bottom of the first off Mexico starter Travis Blackley, who picked up the loss. The Puerto Ricans scored on two doubles by Jesus Feliciano and Miguel Abreu and singles by Luis Figueroa and Randy Ruiz.

Naranjeros got two runs back in the fourth, but the Puerto Ricans put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer by Michael Hernandez. Bill Pulshipher pitched five complete innings and got the victory. (MORE)

Figueroa throws 3-hitter for Dominican Republic

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (AP) Nelson Figueroa pitched a three-hitter and the Dominican Republic's Leones del Escogido beat Mexico's Naranjeros de Hermosillo 7-1 on Wednesday in the Caribbean Series.

Figueroa, who spent the past two seasons with the New York Mets, struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

The Dominican Republic scored four times in the top of the first inning off starter Hector Daniel Rodriguez. The big blow was a two-run homer by Fernando Martinez. (MORE)

Figueroa gets complete game in Dominican win

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (AP) Nelson Figueroa has thrown a complete game to lead the Dominican Republic's Leones del Escogido over Mexico's Naranjeros de Hermosillo 7-1 in the Caribbean Series.

Figueroa gave up only one run and three hits in going the distance on Wednesday. He also struck out eight without a walk.

The Dominicans scored four times in the top of the first off Mexican starter Hector Daniel Rodriguez, who picked up the loss. The main blow was a two-run homer by Fernando Martinez. (MORE)

Naranjeros win opener in Caribbean Series

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (AP) Ruben Rivera hit a two-run triple and Mexican club Naranjeros de Hermosillo beat Venezuela's Leones del Caracas 7-2 in the Caribbean Series on Tuesday.

Pablo Ortega allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings for Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Republic also won, beating Puerto Rico's Indios de Mayaguez 2-1 in the opening game of the series. Kevin Barker hit a go-ahead homer and Raul Valdes pitched six solid innings. (MORE)

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (AP) Kevin Barker hit a go-ahead homer and Raul Valdes pitched six solid innings, leading the Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Republic to a 2-1 victory over Puerto Rico's Indios de Mayaguez in the opening game of the Caribbean Series on Tuesday.

Valdes allowed one run and six hits with eight strikeouts. Barker's shot snapped a 1-all tie in the sixth.

Naranjeros de Hermosillo of Mexico was set to play Venezuela's Leones del Caracas in the late game Tuesday. The six-day, four-team series ends on Saturday. (MORE)
