Ex-All-Star Mondesi gets 8 years in jail

(TSX / STATS) -- Former major league outfielder Raul Mondesi was sentenced to eight years in prison for corruption and mishandling of public funds while serving as mayor of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic.

Mondesi, who was also fined 60 million pesos, was the 1994 National League Rookie of the Year. He had been under house arrest since February while awaiting trial.

The 46-year-old will be prohibited from holding any public office in the country for 10 years.
