Wozniacki breaks through, claims Pan Pacific title
(TSX / STATS) -- Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark defeated Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-0, 7-5 to retain her Pan Pacific Open title played in Tokyo on Sunday.
Wozniacki, who also won the tournament title in 2010, earned her first title of the year. The No. 3 seed in the tournament lost all six of her previous finals in 2017.
"This was my seventh final of the year -- it gets harder to get that last win," said Wozniacki, the world's No. 6-ranked player.
Wozniacki has won at least one title every year since 2008. She appeared to be in strong contention after upsetting No. 1 seed Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Pavlyuchenkova struggled from the start in the first set in the finals. She entered with 35 double faults in four matches previously in the tournament. That was extended to 36 with her first serve of the match.
The Russian challenged Wozniacki more in the second set. She failed to earn a break point in the match in her first premier-level final since Moscow in 2015.
Pavlyuchenkova needed three sets to win all four of her matches leading up to the final.
