Pottinger may be an alternate, but she's an experienced skip that provides strong depth to a U.S. team aiming to win a medal for the first time. Her experience includes competing at the 2010 Games as the third on Debbie McCormick's team, which finished last with a 2-7 record. Pottinger and McCormick have been reunited for Sochi. Pottinger's inclusion, however, came after her team lost the final of the U.S. Olympic trials to Erika Brown's team in November. She was an alternate for Brown at the 1994 world junior championships, earning a silver medal. Her experience should prove valuable, competing at 10 world championships. She skipped a team that missed out on the playoffs at the 2012 tournament, losing 9-8 to Canada in the tiebreaker round. Domestically, Pottinger is a force. She's won 10 U.S. championships, getting her first in 1995 and most recent in 2012 when she was named U.S. Curling Female Athlete of the Year. She also earned that honor in 2008. Pottinger's success at U.S. championships also includes reaching the podium on six other occasions, claiming bronze in 2013.
